The Future Of Electric Cars In California by Samson Paulotti

Green technology is in the boom in California. Today, the state is the leader in promoting the use of renewable energy sources and fighting global warming. Most buildings and homes in California are now energy-efficient and are using both solar and wind energy resources. And aside from renewable sources, the state is also looking into extending green technology to transportation.

During a recent conference, the governor of California together with a few mayors and council leaders voted for yet another green project that will start with the Bay Area. The new project will involve lessening greenhouse gas emissions by replacing the use of oil or fuelled engines with electric cars.

While fuel and oil have been a big part of California's transportation industry, the community is also experiencing the adverse effects of using them. According to research, 40% of California's greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation. These gas emissions cause air pollution which can be very harmful to human health. Aside from this, transportation will also hasten the depletion of oil and fuel. It is estimated that transportation will consume half of oil and fuel resources in the coming decades.

Electric cars differ from ordinary cars in terms of engine. Ordinary cars use internal combustion engines which are run by fuel or oil. Electric cars on the other hand, use electric motors run by purely electricity coming from a battery pack. There are already electric cars in the market, yet they slid to the bottom of the list of preferred cars due to the hassle of battery charging. Apart from purely electronic cars, there have also been other types that use a mix of electric and hydrogen. These cars are called hybrid cars and cost more than the ordinary cars. They too, like purely electronic cars, have become least favoured cars due to cost.

The new green transportation plan in California will be handled by a private company-Better Place, backed by government and private funding. The project will be tested in the Bay Area since it is a densely populated urban area and electric cars are efficient in heavy traffic. By 2012, Better Place and the state expect mass availability of electric cars.

Green Effects for California

Green transportation will have many effects for this state's community. First of all, the state will be looking at an increased economy. Apart from the income from the sale of electric cars, the project will also create more jobs.

Secondly and the most important advantage of a green transportation program in California is a clean and greener environment. The use of electric cars will decrease the adverse effects of greenhouse gas emissions as well as conserve the depleting energy resources. Although using oil and fuel have adverse effects, these energy sources still have to be conserved since they are still an important aspect for survival.

The green transportation project of the state of California will have a two-fold effect to its economy and community. In the process of being energy-efficient, the state will boost its economy and create a healthier and greener environment at the same time.
